Tunisia is among the driest countries in Africa and is characterized by limited water resources. The demand for irrigation is 84% of the total water allowances, making agriculture by far the largest water consumer. In addition, the demand for water for the domestic, industrial and tourist needs continues to increase.

With 1298 km of mostly sandy shorelines, the tourist sector has seen a tremendous increase over the last decade. Water demand in this sector is projected to reach 41 Mcm in 2030. So the use of non-conventional water resources can play an increasingly important role in satisfying the growing water requirements.

MENAWARA project aims to improve the quality of treated wastewater and increase its use in agriculture thus reducing the pressure on fresh water, increasing income of rural communities in Tunisia making them more prosperous and less vulnerable.
