On the occasion of World Wetlands Day on 2nd February 2021, Roman Lopez from the Regional Entity for Wastewater Sanitation and Treatment in Murcia (ESAMUR) in the AQUACYCLE Partnership spoke to the COPE Murcia Radio Station in its daily “Morning in Murcia” programme.

A recording of the interview (in Spanish) is available from this link.

Roman placed AQUACYCLE in the context of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, which is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed in 1971.

The wetlands in AQUACYCLE take the form of constructed wetlands, which bring a nature-based solution in the design of the project’s eco-innovative wastewater treatment system, that comprises an anaerobic digestion, constructed wetlands and solar raceway ponds. In adopting this approach, the constructive wetlands create thriving biodiversity habitats.

The picture above brings the artificial wetland of Campotejar in Murcia which is fed with the treated water of the wastewater treatment plant which can be seen in in the background. The "white dome" in the pictures is used for the storage of biogas produced by the wastewater treatment plant.
