The Centre of Biotechnology of Sfax (CBS), Tunisian partner of CEOMED, has an important role in the pilots of the project as they test the concept of the project to demonstrate the viability of waste valorisation. During the past summer and the beginning of autumn, they attended different events where CEOMED was presented to interesting stakeholders.

Mouna Jraou (PhD student in the CEOMED framework) attended the 4^th PhD summer school and executive training on solid waste management and circular economy which took place in Corfu, Greece on 13^th & 14^th June 2022. Potential Speakers and researchers provided interesting topics related to strategic processes for waste management and specifically anaerobic digestion technology for organic waste treatment. On June 15^th, 2022, the participant attended the Poster Session of the "CORFU 2022 9^th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management", and the fi­nal session roundtable with the main topic the "State-of-the-art and future directions of Sustainable Solid Waste treatment: the pathway to Circular Economy".

Energy valorization of organic waste: experiences and innovation

The Laboratory of Environmental Bioprocesses (LBPE) of the CBS, in close collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin, Germany and Water Technology and the Research Center Technopole Borj Cedria, organized during June 23 and 24, 2022 a major event spread over 2 days. The program of which included a forum on "The energy recovery of organic waste: Experiences and Innovation” followed by a workshop to promote innovation at the CBS. The topic of the forum attracted a good and diversified audience of around sixty people of scientists, industrial and other socio-economic actors closely related to the theme of the event (National Agency of Waste Management, National Agency of Environmental Protection, Sfax Municipality, etc.). This event recorded above all the involvement and active participation of the main political decision-makers in the region, in the persons of the Governor and the Mayor of Sfax, thus contributing to the enrichment and success of the discussion panel on the solutions for waste management in Tunisia. The participation of CBS in this event relied on the presentation of Prof Sami Sayadi about the experience of anaerobic digestion in Tunisia and on the presentation of CEOMED project by Prof Sonia Khoufi. The 2^nd day consisted of an innovation promotion workshop which took place at the CBS and brought together some forty participants, including industrial and socio-economic partners, which was followed by a visit to the CBS site of the "InnoVa" pilot station for the treatment of vegetable waters.

Reflection circle «The Economics of Natural Resources: The Great Uncertainties (21st and 22nd September, Sfax, Tunisia)

The Laboratory of Environmental Bioprocesses (LBPE) of the CBS, in close collaboration with the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sfax and the Higher Institute of Industrial Management of Sfax organized an event about the economics of natural resources. This event aims to enrich the discussions and to make fruitful  exchanges on “natural resources” in various disciplines: economic, history , technology , social ,  environment  and geopolitics . The theme of “economic of natural resources” is relevant to the circular economy model. The participation of CBS in this event relied on two presentations. The first one was presented by Prof Mohamed Chamkha and was about research projects developed by the Laboratory of Environmental Bioprocesses with the aim of using biotechnology for the valorization of natural resources. The second presentation was presented by Prof Sonia Khoufi about the CEOMED project as a case study for the application of circular economy for waste management.
