The DECOST project activity in Italy continues: as it has been done in all the sites where this ENI CBC MED project has developed its community composting pilots, the Italian partners of the consortium are working to raise awareness about the new organic waste management approach that will be implemented in the city of Potenza.

In collaboration with Crtec, the Italian Composting Association and Legambiente Potenza, the University of Basilicata organized a training event that counted with the participation of the future users of the pilot and other citizens interested in the topic.

It was a good opportunity to disseminate the concept of community composting and its benefits for small towns or residential neighbourhoods in cities, and to clarify the differences among self-composting, community composting and local composting. The attendants also received information about the composting process, and the parameters that have the major influence on the quality of the compost (humidity, oxygen, temperature, C/N rate and pH, etc.).

The most relevant part of the event was focused in the technical knowledge that will be necessary to manage the new composters chosen for Potenza city, which will be slightly different from those installed in the other DECOST pilots. However, they also received basic knowledge related with the Italian the law on waste management treatment, the Fertilizers Decree 75/2010 and the Legislative Decree 152/2006.
