Representatives of the University of Patras, project partner of the DECOST project, participated in the 4th Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Environmental Integration (EMCEI-2022) that was held in Sousse, Tunisia, last November.

At the conference, Dr Dimitra Chondrogianni, Architect, MSc, PhD, and Researcher at the University of Patras, gave a presentation titled “Sustainability and transferability potential of home and community composting: The study case of Greece”. Her presentation was based on the information elaboarted together with Ms. Panagiota Saranti, Civil Engineer MSc and Researcher at the University of Patras and Prof. Stephanedes, from the same institution. In this presentation, the concepts of home and community composting in waste management and recent examples of community and home composting implementation were presented, focusing on projects with sustainable impact.

As case study, this paper analyzes the sustainability and transferability potential of the home and community composting initiatives that took place in the DECOST project, and their potential replication in Greece. Main findings indicate that sustainability and transferability of the community-based composting projects require the integration of the quadruple helix of com-munity, government, business, and technology.

To further strengthen Euro-Mediterranean environmental integration, this year the 4th Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Environmental Integration (EMCEI-2022) was organised, in close collaboration with Springer and several partners in the region. The conference aimed to gather new research contributions from all disciplines of earth and environmental sciences by scientists from diverse backgrounds, and thus makes an essential contribution towards ensuring that science and knowledge contribute to the promotion of a more sustainable environment for the Euro-Mediterranean and surrounding regions.

More information regarding the conference can be found on its official website.
