Final event summary and proceedings : Mediterranean Forum for Applied Ecosystem-based Management

The Mediterranean Forum for Applied Ecosystem-based Management, funded under the ENI CBC MED Programme's thematic objective B.4, successfully organized its final event in Tunisia. Hosted by l´Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM), the event served as a platform to showcase the project's outputs and achievements, highlighting the accomplishments of each Project Partner in their respective targeted areas. The event facilitated active cross-border collaboration, bringing together stakeholders from Tunisia, Jordan, Italy, and beyond. It featured a final workshop, semester 8 Steering Committee Meeting, and a Field Visit to the Kneiss Islands, the Project's target area in Tunisia. This document provides a comprehensive summary of the final workshop and field visit proceedings, focusing on the innovative computerized spatial planning management tool and the diverse mentoring and capacity-building initiatives undertaken to address integrated coastal zone management challenges.

MedTOWN Demonstrative Actions on co-production initiatives in collaboration with SSE entities

In total, 6 Demonstrative Actions have been designed and implemented to target poverty and social exclusion, addressing diverse areas such as social and economic inclusion through SSE initiatives and digital innovation, women empowerment, waste management, and use of public spaces in collaboration with local public authorities and SSE actors. It is estimated that more than 25,000 individuals at social and economic exclusion directly benefited from the project, accessing better social services in their communities through the implementation of the MedTOWN Demonstrative in the 6 partner countries (Palestine, Jordan, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, Greece). MedTOWN The Phoenix Journey: Transformative Pathways for Eco social Co-production

The MedTOWN project partnership developed a high-quality Capacity Building and Technical Service Plan with the brand name “The Phoenix Journey: Transformative Pathways for Ecosocial Co-production”. This plan is designed to support the creation and implementation of co-production initiatives for the social and economic integration of vulnerable groups, in partnership with Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) actors. A team of local experts participated in two Training of Trainers Co-Creation Workshops to adapt the capacity building programme to their local context and territory. These sessions provided a range of tools and instruments for establishing local communities of practice and co-production partnerships through 4 day National Workshops on co-production of social services. The training is available online in the MedTOWN Community of Practice platform, which automatically produces a Certificate of completing the training. Only registered users can access the training material. You can register here https://medsocialinnovationlab.org/en_gb/ .

MedTOWN Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Report of the Demonstrative Actions

MedTOWN has created a framework for monitoring and evaluating social experimentation. This process was a complex task due to the diversity of social policies in each territory and the lack of regulatory frameworks for Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) and co-production across the six countries. MedTOWN's approach to this challenge was to provide findings that could immediately and practically serve policy-making. This was achieved by evaluating intentional, unintentional, and political changes in local socio-economic resilience.
The current evaluation aims to offer a regional perspective on the MedTOWN project, providing an overall assessment of its achievements, learnings, and findings. It synthesizes research and evaluation conducted by a team of local experts. The evaluation addresses both summative and formative aspects, examining whether the project achieved its goal of demonstrating the value of co-producing public policies with Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) actors. The assessment also aims to provide valuable insights for project actors and stakeholders, emphasizing the interconnected nature of summative and formative dimensions.

Informative material: Irrigation and Maintenance (Palestine)

Water scarcity in Mediterranean countries is often the result of inadequate infrastructure and management practices. The MENAWARA project aims to improve access to water through the treatment of wastewater to be reused as complementary irrigation and to strengthen the capacity of all stakeholders operating in the sector. This section contains informative material relating to irrigation practices, specifically in Palestine.

Informative material - Safe reuse of treated waste water in agriculture

This section contains informative material on the safe reuse of treated waste water in agriculture. The reuse offers an important alternative source to release pressure on the freshwater resources and it can be useful to address the issue and crisis of water scarcity in Palestine.

MED4EBM Forum: end of the project and future outlook

Presentation provided at the final event of the MED4EB project about The Mediterranean Forum for Applied Ecosystem-based management (MED4EBM Forum established in May 2022 with a presentation event in Sibari (CS).

MEDWAYCAP Interactive map

A 3D interactive map showing the territorial coverage of the good practices developed by the different projects that have worked in synergy during MEDWAYCAP. The map provides collaborative and interactive learning opportunities, offering a dynamic and engaging way to learn about the solutions developed in the different Mediterranean countries. This map is the result of a joint effort of all partners, who shared their best practices by telling their stories using the storytelling method. Have a look at the map on the homepage of the MENAWARA project.

MEDWAYCAP Memorandum of Understanding

An alliance for a long-term capitalisation strategy at Mediterranean level to improve non-conventional water supply, management and reuse, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the project partners and associated partners, as part of a broader capitalisation strategy. The parties to the Memorandum agreed to develop and implement an advocacy strategy and to set measurable milestones to assess the relevance of their joint initiative to the main outcomes sought.

Integrate Municipal Waste Management Plan - Municipality of Bickfaya (Lebanon)

This is one of the Integrated Municipal Waste Management Plans (IMWMP) developed within the CLIMA project. The IMWMP incorporates specific measures to manage waste, including organic waste, establish ambitious waste reduction targets, and promote the reuse of organic components.

AQUACYCLE My Autobiography - Part 2 Exceeding on expectations

The manuscript “AQUACYCLE My Autobiography” brings an account of the project’s journey through the ‘eyes’ of the project’s eco-innovative wastewater treatment system.
It is foremost intended to share the project’s aims and objectives and the progress towards achieving these objectives in an easy-to-understand manner. It is hoped that readers, including society at large will thus gain access into the functioning and purpose of the components that make up the treatment system: an anaerobic digester, one or more constructed wetlands and a solar raceway pond reactor.
Along the project’s journey, AQUACYCLE meets up not only with his ‘creators’, i.e. the research teams in the ENI CBC Med funded project but also with water stakeholders, including farmers from around the Mediterranean Region who are alerting to the dire water situation they are facing and how junior high school students amaze their teachers with their intimate knowledge also of EU regulations concerning treated wastewater reuse and more.
This second tome, published in October 2023 brings the sequel to My Autobiography: Anxiously waiting to make my physical appearance, published in February 2022. The latter collects the chapters prior to the construction of a first pilot demonstration unit of the treatment system in Spain, hence the title ‘Anxiously waiting to make my physical appearance’.
In this sequel, the reader is informed how the project reached all of its originally foreseen objectives ... and much more ! ... hence the title ‘Exceeding on expectations’.
