Enhancing wastewater reuse: the contribution of the MENAWARA project to Jordanian farmers

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is an arid to semi-arid country. Water resources depend on variable rainfall and therefore are characterized by scarcity, variability, and uncertainty: Jordan is therefore ranked fourth poorest country with regard to water resources worldwide.

The largest water consume is prior taken from Agriculture, taking about 70 % of the national water budget. The use of treated waste water for irrigation is a national objective to double the utilization of treated waste water to 15 Million m³ by 2035.

MENAWARA project aims to improve the quality of treated wastewater and increase its use in agriculture thus reducing the pressure on fresh water, increasing income of rural communities in Jordan making them more prosperous and less vulnerable
