FruitFlyNet-ii in Greece organised a session on Artificial Intelligence for pest identification and plant protection

On the 31st of October 2023 and in the frame of the FruitFlyNet-ii project, the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) organised a Living Lab session an essential event towards the integration of the Location Aware System (LAS)  and its products. Machine and deep learning techniques have been exploited to develop fully automated and accurate detection that does not include human in the loop. The problem is challenging due to the small size of the detected object, the differences in the physical conditions the pictures were taken, and the lack of enough data to train the learning model. Various deep learning methods for detecting and counting the number of pests, such as the olive fruit flies, were proposed and discussed.

Following the opening presentation of the expert Dr. Konstantinos Ferentinos, participants exchanged enriching discussions, explored various possibilities and proposed enhancements and limitations. Around 20 academics, mainly researchers in the field, post graduates, and students followed the event and express their interest and actively participated.
