Med-EcoSuRe lays out its energy efficient solutions for buildings to promote sustainable practices in Euro-Mediterranean territories

On the 6th of July 2022, AN Najah Univerity, partner of Med-EcoSuRe project, participated in the webinar "Higher Education Institutions for sustainability: what universities do and can do to lead the sustainability in their territory" organised by UNIMED in the framework of the Uni-Eco Project and Urban Transports Community - Interreg Med project.

The aim of the event was to gather local, international and Euro-Mediterranean stakeholders to share their experiences and feedback of pilot projects implemented and their visions for the future to promote sustainable practices in Euro-Mediterranean territories.

During a session (Higher Education Institutions responsibilities and engagement in sustainable development) dedicated to initiatives where universities promote a wider engagement at local and international levels for sustainability transition, An Najah University intervened to share the experience of Med-EcoSuRe project in Palestine.

Dr Imad Ibrik from An Najah University presented the pilot demonstration actions implemented including:

  • Building rooftop PV power plants enabling to reduce the CO2 emissions by around 330 Tons/year and the university’s electricity bill;
  • A solar Carport allowing  to fully charge up to 6 electric vehicles, and provides shade to 24 of parking spaces within the university
  • A solar tree enabling charging 100 electrical devices, including computers, mobile phones, wheelchairs, and lighting 20 LED lamps,

Dr Imad shared also an overview on the policy roadmap, under development, for the long term renovation of the university building stock, by bringing together the technical and economic appraisal with the review of policy options.
