Building on the success of the first TouMaLi (Preventing Tourism Marine Litter) Conference in Egypt, the second international TouMaLi Conference took place on the 8th and 9th of November 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco and Med4Waste was there to present an overview of its implemented actions.

The 2-day Conference on "Effective Waste Management for Sustainable Tourism and Marine Ecosystem Protection" brought together political institutions, municipalities, international organisations, NGOs, research & education institutions and the tourism industry to support the formation and reinforcement of international and cross-regional networks by providing a platform for international exchange to fight marine litter together!

One of the root causes of marine litter in the Mediterranean is poor municipal waste management practices and Med4Waste signalled this message during a session focusing on regional and Mediterranean policies and programs on marine pollution and waste management. Mr. Haris Paliogiannis, Policy Officer of MIO-ECSDE, a key partner of Med4Waste for the policy dialogue and mainstreaming activities of the project, presented the Med4Waste capitalization actions for promoting sustainable waste management governance as one of the good initiatives from the Mediterranean region.

The Conference offered an invaluable opportunity to share the successes of Med4Waste with a new, yet very relevant waste management audience, continue its efforts in synergizing with other important projects working on waste reduction in the Mediterranean and support the implementation of the UfM’s 2030 GreenerMed Agenda as well as promote the importance of regional cooperation for a litter-free Mediterranean.
