Under Her Highness Princess Basma bint Ali, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Hashemite Fund for Badia Development, and Chair of the Royal Botanical Garden, sponsored the launch of the Food Security conference in Jordan, “Reality and Future Vision” which held at the Al-Ahliyya Amman University on the 1st of December 2022.

On behalf of Dr Nizar Haddad, the General Director of the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), Dr. Naem Mazahrih, the MENAWARA and MEDWAYCAP projects manager in Jordan, presented a paper on food security and agricultural scientific research in Jordan. He highlighted the main challenges facing the agriculture development and food security in Jordan namely the water scarcity, land degradation and the climate change. One of the solutions to reduce the impact of water scarcity in Jordan is the best use of each drop of water specially in agriculture which is the greatest water consumer sector. Treated wastewater is the only water resource which increases with the increase of the population and considered as one of the alternatives for reducing the pressure on fresh water. In this aspect Dr. Naem Mazahrih appreciates the role of ENI CBC MED projects specially initiatives and knowledge sharing between the MENAWARA and PROSIM projects, as well as the capitalization activities in Jordan in the context of MEDWAYCAP project, foreseen in 2023. He concluded that action of these projects will reduce the stress on freshwater sources from agriculture sector and will improve the quality of treated wastewater (TWW) in agriculture. Clean and environmental friendly technological, managerial and operational innovation will be applied and results shared among relevant stakeholders.
