The University of Jordan in cooperation with the University of Jordan Schools organized an awareness campaign on water use efficiency targeting schools’ students on May 23, 2023.

The event was attended by more than 45 students of the seventh and eighth grades, in the presence of the director and a number of members of the teaching and administrative staff.

During the campaign, Prof. Ahmed Al-Salaymeh, project coordinator at the University of Jordan, gave a brief overview of the NAWAMED project and pointed out the importance of water conservation in our daily lives. A short film produced in the framework of the project was also screened at the event.

In addition, the campaign included a field visit to the pilot plant for grey water treatment in Al-Zahra’a dormitory at the University of Jordan, in the presence of representatives of the construction company, where the participants listened to a brief and simple explanation about the techniques of nature-based solutions (green walls) and their role in treating water.

On the other hand, the students enjoyed applying a practical experiment on water purification using layers of gravel, sand and silica. In addition, leaflets containing tips on rationalizing water consumption were distributed to the students.

The school garden is not irrigated with tap water, but grey water is collected and purified through filters, and then the treated water is used to irrigate the school garden.

In conclusion, the participants expressed their support for such projects in light of Jordan's suffering from water scarcity and they inquired about the possibility of applying such technologies at the school level where there is sufficient water consumption.
