The meeting, hosted by the American University of Beirut (AUB), consisted of a three-day gathering of the NAWAMED Project Technical and Steering Committee to discuss ongoing activities and future plans for the project.

On the first day, the Technical Committee Meeting was held to review the progress of each project partner's activities and to update the status of the work packages.

The second day was characterized by a technical workshop addressing the challenges associated with the construction of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and included a discussion on the outcomes of the Mediterranean Water Table and Sustainable Water Management.

During the Mediterranean Water Table, Yaser Abunnasr (AUB) and Manuel Sapiano (Energy Water Agency of Malta - EWA) led an interesting debate between the partners to share the various experiences in the development of the pilot plants and to identify the main component of the final document to be produced to promote the use of Non-Conventional Water Resources (NCWR) and NBSs.

The first part of the debate focused on the practical limitations that have affected the implementation of the pilot plant, according to the different phases of the project: administrative procedures, availability of materials, knowledge of the constructed company about the proposed NBSs and availability to learn new practices, costs, etc... In fact, one of the delays in the installation of the pilots was due to the lack of capacity of the existing construction companies to participate in the launched tender, being an innovative system. This was the reason for the integration of a new activity in the project, the training sessions, targeting the constructed companies.

The partners also discussed other constraints, such as the availability of materials and costs, at local level, with the possibility of transforming limitation into an opportunity to develop a new economy linked to Sustainable Water Management and implementation of NBSs.

The second phase of the day was dedicated to debate on the key messages at the political level to promote the use of NCWR at the Mediterranean level. The partners are valorizing the pilot experiences and the workshops developed in each country (four workshops called "water tables" were developed involving thousands of stakeholders) in order to systematize the barriers and opportunities and thus identify a common pathway. The document will be finalized in the coming months and presented at the closing event in Italy next July.

Finally, the meeting concluded with a technical field visit to NAWAMED's pilot green wall at AUB and a technical visit to NAWAMED's pilot constructed wetlands at the Advancing Research Enabling Communities Center (AREC), AUB Bekaa campus.
