RESMYLE in France: An international practical training workshop on the ground to highlight traditional know-how

From 12 to 26 March 2023, an international practical training workshop was held in Volonne (France), with the aim of introducing a dozen young people from France, Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, aged under 30, who are unemployed, untrained or no longer in training, to the art of calade work.

Since 2020, the OPUS association, a local partner in the RESMYLE project, has been building the calade on the Chemin de Charreirasse in Volonne as part of volunteer workcamps. The aim of these workcamps is to enhance the value of villages and their environment, as well as traditional techniques and skills, by restoring and restoring small-scale heritage. It was with this in mind that the association decided to promote the art of the calade in Volonne to the young people taking part in the practical on-the-job training workshop.

During the 15-day workshop, Bastien, Mathis, Alla and the others discovered how to lay this road surface with the help of Jean-Cosme and Jonathan, the animators. They were able to see calades in some of the remarkable sites nearby, including Notre Dame of Ganagobie and the Prieuré of Salagon.

Calades are an environmentally-friendly technique, as they are made from simple materials that require little processing (stone, earth and lime). They also protect the soil against erosion, allowing rainwater to infiltrate and preventing run-off in the event of heavy rainfall.

Mohammad, Raja, Viktor and the others put their learning into practice:
- building part of the calade on the chemin de la Charreirasse
- producing educational panels on the calade, which will be installed at each end of the chemin de la Charreirasse to educate visitors
- creating an educational leaflet to be distributed to local residents.

In the end, Sara, Seifeddine and the others presented their work to the local population at a public event held in the heart of the village.

This workshop was part of RESMYLE project, the aim of which is to reconcile 2 current issues: :
- The difficulties of integrating young people into the workforce in the Mediterranean region,
- The lack of skills in areas related to environmental protection,

by offering on-the-job training for young people in sustainable development and environmental issues, based on mobility, intercultural exchanges and shared tutoring/training between countries in the Mediterranean basin.

OPUS, a Euro-Mediterranean association based in Provence and accredited by the CPIE des Pays de Vaucluse (Centre Permanent d'Initiatives pour l'Environnement), offers a wide range of activities linked to heritage enhancement and environmental protection. It is one of the French partners in  RESMYLE project.
