RESMYLE Jordan: Food Security as a pilar for youth health

image

Like many countries in the Mediterranean region, Jordan experiences different challenges regarding the availability and accessibility of culturally appropriate food. However, a limited governmental effort is made to educate the residents about food security and the connected environmental challenges. These resources made by the Jordanian University of Sciences and Technologies (JUST) educate the youth about ways to obtain a nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system.

The resources included educational videos with experts in food security, food information card matching games, info-graphs about the cycle of food from production to consumption, and Info-graphs about food storage, and a short video that describes the food issues facing Jordan. All the materials educate the youth about food nutrition, the food life cycle from production to consumption, information about the energy required to produce, transport, and consume food, and ways to preserve food and reduce food waste.

Food Information Card Matching Game

The game consists of two sets of cards; the first set includes pictures of food types and the second one includes dietary information about the food. The minimum number of players is two. The game starts by shuffling each set of cards and laying them face-down on the table. Players take turns turning over one card from each set. If the picture on one card matches the information on the other card, then the player keeps the cards, otherwise, she put the cards face down again. Each time a player has a match, she reads the information about the food. The winner is the player with the most cards when all the cards have been taken.
