A great community event to encourage composting and promote reuse. This was the result of Kompofest, the initiative promoted by the Cordoba waste management entity, Sadeco, within the framework of the REUSEMED project. The event took place on February 27 in Cordoba, with the aim of implementing community and individual composting systems in the locality and setting the precedent for an annual event that will serve as an attraction for tourists.

The location of the Cordoba neighborhood of Santa María de Trassierra, in a natural environment and plenty of single-family homes, most of them with land available for the installation of a vegetable garden, made it an ideal setting for the initiative. Those attending the festival were able to learn and be trained on the most appropriate composting techniques to divert part of the organic fraction from the urban waste circuit.

The event included several recreational activities to encourage the participation of the neighbors. The agenda included dramatizations for children on the characteristics of the composting process, training activities for children from schools and associations, live musical performances and other entertainment activities.

The Kompofest initiative pursues one of the main objectives of the REUSEMED project, raising public awareness of the importance and benefits of implementing reuse practices. In fact, according to a survey carried out as part of the project last year, 54.5% of the people of Cordoba were unaware of the term "composting" and only 17.2% had ever practiced it, although they valued positively the initiatives to install composters in homes with gardens or community areas.

REUSEMED proposes to create municipal networks based on reuse circuits for home appliances, furniture, books, clothes, Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment and food. To set up the networks, 4 cities in Spain, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia will design and test composting installations, food collection points in markets, repair and reuse centers, reuse corners in shops and repairing cafes.
