The Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE) organises the 1st MED-IAERE conference (Cagliari, 22-23 of April 2022) to reinforce cooperation for sustainable development and to contribute to the solution of several pressing environmental issues.

In particular, MEDISS attends the Poster session on 23 of April 2022, aimed at the promotion and dissemination of funded projects focusing on environmental issues in the Med area. This will be an opportunity for MEDISS and other EU-funded projects to showcase and present the outline and preliminary results, with a specific focus on policy implications, lessons learned and replicability.

The Conference will be held in the Faculty of Economics, Law and Political Sciences of the University of Cagliari, Viale S. Ignazio 74-78, Cagliari.

Below is a brief presentation of the event, to encourage our readers to join us in the discussions in Cagliari, here the programme

MED IAERE Conference

Over the last decades, the quality of the Mediterranean environment has been increasingly degraded by anthropisation. Rapid urbanisation, water scarcity, pollution, are some of the factors that generate major environmental problems expected to be exacerbated by climate change.

The Mediterranean is a so-called "hot spot" of the ongoing climate crisis, where the number of people suffering from water stress is already expected to increase dramatically - with consequent migratory impacts - and where high temperatures have fostered a alarming escalation of fires (also) during the summer of 2021.

The problems and, above all, the opportunities of the European ecological transition intersect with those of the Mediterranean, and both will find a home in Cagliari from 21 to 23 April, when a double event will take place: the 10th annual IAERE conference and the 1st Med-IAERE conference, dedicated to the themes and experts of the Mediterranean area.

The choice was made to "bring together environmental and resource economists working on environmental problems in the Mediterranean area and strengthen cooperation to achieve environmental and sustainable development in the Mediterranean".

In order to broaden and strengthen the scientific debate, the IAERE conference in Cagliari will also host a special session on 'Agriculture and Sustainability' - another fundamental aspect of the Mediterranean's ecological transition.

The MED IAERE is meant as a platform aiming at:

  • creating a network of environmental and resource economists active in the Mediterranean region;
  • contributing towards global progress on environmental issues regarding the Mediterranean region;
  • contributing to the long-term sustainable development vision for the Mediterranean region, especially within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
  • discussing about policy options that may contribute to the objectives of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development 2016-2025;
  • offering a space for reflection and debate for the preparation of proposals to face environmental challenges in the Mediterranean Region;
  • identifying common environmental problems affecting Mediterranean countries and corresponding policy solutions.

IAERE, as promoter of this initiative, has invited scientists working on environmental problems in the Mediterranean area as well as institutes and organisations carrying out research or active in the Mediterranean Region to contribute to the conference submitting research papers focused on environmental issues in the Med area.
