On May 6th 2021, the ORGANIC ECOSYSTEM project had a meeting with DECOST project in order to explore possible cooperations and agree on synergies. During the first section, Dr. Munir Al Rusan from Jordan University for Science and Technology as (partner) introduced DECOST and stated that the project aims to develop a new framework of waste management, building a closed-loop system of organic waste valorization, integrating decentralized home and community composting systems with urban agriculture. This goal can only be achieved by using a people-centered approach, empowering civil society and increasing institutional capacity building. Thanks to DECOST, Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Plans and pilot initiatives will be implemented in 4 different municipalities in order to reduce food waste, treat 1,500-2,000 tons of organic waste/year and use the produced compost in urban agriculture projects.

In the second section, Eng. Tamam Al Khwalda from the Jordan Ministry of Agriculture (Lead Beneficiary) presented an Introduction to ORGANIC ECOSYSTEM project, and stated that the project aims to reduce obstacles that SMES operating in organic agriculture face and make them more competitive and better integrated. The project intends to create an agri-food ecosystem across borders, paving the way for the development of the organic sector in the entire Mediterranean region. The project has launched a unique online platform that aims to connect and support the Mediterranean organic operators, where any operator working in a Mediterranean country can send a request to our set of expert on organic agriculture in Arabic, French, English, Greek and Italian and they will advise and guide free of costs. Registration is available here.

At the last section, an open discussion was made between participants who were interested in both projects.

Finally, it was agreed that further cooperation will be made between the two projects in the future to support their outputs.
