The problem of the ammonia pollution in wastewater is one of the relevant topics in the environmental sector.
Ammonia pollution is a matter of increasing concern for regulatory authorities because of the serious threat it poses to the balance of sensitive habitats and to flora and fauna. Controlling ammonia discharges from wastewater treatment can make a significant contribution to reducing its environmental impact and is subject to a growing number of directives
Nitrogen, including ammoniacal nitrogen, is – indeed - ranked in the top three to global issues way beyond any reasonable boundaries of sustainability. The anthropogenic nitrogen production should be reduced by 75% N to 35 TgN/a.
MEDISS project addresses the issue of improving the quality of saline groundwater in the Mediterranean area opening alternative irrigation for higher quality and more diversified cultivations.
In Arborea (Sardinia, Italy), MEDISS project develops a prototype for ammonia stripping from waste sludges to produce fertilizers, in a plant equipped with biogas cogeneration. The main purpose of the prototype plant is to investigate the possibilities for ammonia removal out of wastewater stream.
Now, the prototype for Arborea is finally ready to be delivered.
The prototype plant consists of a container equipped with all the necessary equipment, like filtration units, membranes, tanks, pumps, valves, hydraulic and electrical connections, and anything else needed for the proper functioning of the system. The container makes the plant easily removable and transportable.

The prototype plant will be located at a Cooperative 'Produttori Arborea' facility operating the treatment of zootechnical waste in Arborea (Sardinia, Italy).
