"The future lies in investing in the specialisation of the younger generations" declared Pino Musolino, the president of the Port Authority of the Central-Northern Tyrrhenian Sea declared following the first official meeting of the Italian stakeholders of the YEP MED project.
Already from this first meeting the entire port community has shown its willingness to believe in this interesting project with 11 partners representing 7 countries, mainly from the Mediterranean area, on which the port of Civitavecchia must absolutely focus on for further growth in the coming years.
The project will develop highly specialised professional training courses, which in turn will nourish young people’s skills in the logistics and intermodal sectors in the partner countries – all to facilitate the development and promotion of new Motorways of the Sea connecting the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean. Among the protagonists of the project, for which in recent months the Port Authority of the Central-Northern Tyrrhenian Sea has been awarded about 3 million euros from the European Union, are also the Escola Europea - Intermodal Transport, the Chamber of Commerce of Beirut and the Port Authorities of Barcelona, Marseille, Valencia, Tunis, Damietta and Aqaba.
Of all the issues discussed to assess the growth and strength of a port, the so-called human capital is a fundamental element: it is the actions, energy, skills, strength and enthusiasm of people that make the difference. It is ideal to start with specific training as the first element to ensure long-term success – and this is the objective of the EU-funded project. Vocational and educational training are fundamental for the training of the workforce, in particular the highly technical and specialised one that operates in and gravitates around ports.
YEP MED should be the first step in something that will have to be built up and become a habit. We need to increase the professionalism and skills of every single operator in our port because, since we don't have any particular assets to spend, the main one is to guarantee excellent quality levels
On some issues, such as Ro/Ro management, although we are already at a very high standard, we need to develop increasingly articulate professionals in relation to the transformations imposed on shipping and logistics through the computerisation and digitalisation of processes. In the coming 5 years we will see more radical changes than those that have taken place in the last 50 years. Therefore, having a high level of professionalism and training for young people today will allow us to have a growing capital for the next 30/35 years with people who will become key players in the changes".
The president finalised his statement by highlighting that, though less visible than the construction of a quay or a structure in itself, this type of project is guaranteed to have a lasting effect on the positive growth elements of a port.
The next meeting of the stakeholders is scheduled for the end of the month, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Port Authority and the port operators, associations and institutions that wish to collaborate in the project will take place. This document will define a common strategy which will shape the path towards the development of professional skills that will contribute to greater competitiveness of the Lazio port network.
About YEP MED
The YEP MED project, led by the Escola Europea - Intermodal Transport, aims to develop port-logistics training and vocational (TVET) resources adapted to sector needs to strengthen youth employability; increase and upgrade local employment opportunities through the creation of real dual-learning programmes with job placements, strengthening the role of SME’s operating in the port ecosystems for future employment creation; and set up collaborative national and transnational partnerships between port-logistics associations, operators, SMEs, training centres and VET providers, whilst introducing a PPP co-management process.
The project counts on the participation of partners from Spain, Italy, France, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan. Throughout 30 months, the partners and associates of the project will implement tools to achieve the main objectives of this initiatives, in the short, medium and long terms. The project will receive 2.9 M€ (90% EU Contribution) in funding over its lifetime
