AQUACYCLE reshares update on levels of wastewater collection and treatment across Europe

To mark World Toilet Day on 19 November 2021, the European Environment Agency (EEA) shared an update on the infrastructure that is in place across Europe to meet the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD). These requirements relate to the (1) collection, (2) biological treatment and (3) biological treatment with nitrogen and/or phosphorous removal of wastewater in urban areas.

AQUACYCLE’s eco-innovative treatment system for domestic effluent is in the final stages of completion at the Blanca wastewater treatment facility in the Murcia Region of Spain.

This brings the motivation for this news post to take a closer look at the nature and quantitative values of the indicators issued by the EEA for Spain.

As depicted in the diagram below, 84% of the urban waste water in Spain is treated according to the requirements of the UWWTD, which is above the EU average of 76%.

A second interactive map on the EEA website permits to identify the level of wastewater treatment of each plant:

In cyan: biological treatment with nitrogen and/or phosphorous removal

In green: Biological treatment

In yellow: Primary treatment (only)
