[MENAWARA] Improving the use of water in agriculture: lots of ways, not just one
There are a lot of ways to reduce the stress on freshwater sources from agriculture improving the quality of treated wastewater. This is what the MENAWARA project partners found in Carrión de los Céspedes (Seville, Spain) during the visit to the experimental plant of Centa, a research center with extensive experience in wastewater treatment. Researchers and technicians from Tunisia, Palestine, Jordan, Spain and Italy exchanged experiences and leart best practices to reduce water insecurity by designing the most suitable systems to promote a sustainable agriculture.
Since 1990 the facilities of Centa Fundación Pública Andaluza have been working on the development, implementation and diffusion of various technologies for the treatment of wastewater which isgenerated by small communities. The peculiarity of the Andalusian facilities lies in the variety of techniques that have been implemented progressively for several decades: green filter (an area planted with trees - poplars and eucalypti - flooded with wastewater), stabilisation ponds (artificial ponds to reproduce the natural purification process), constructed wetlands (passive treatment systems in which purification is the result of physical, chemical and biological actions by wetland plants) and others conventional/non-conventional technologies.
Sharing these experiences is one of the goals of the MENAWARA (Non Conventional WAter Re-use in Agriculture in MEditerranean countries) project, including the promotion and diversification of technologies and practices for communities where technical and financial resources are often limited. In addition, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of Mediterranean governmental institutions, non-state actors, technicians and farmers to adopt the same approaches in the context of climate change.
