The Jordanian partners of the REUSEMED project, the Ministry of Local Administration (MoLA) and the Municipality of New Deir Alaa, have presented the progress in the implementation of the reuse circuits devised within the framework of the project. Specifically, the plan for the country includes five circuits designed following co-design meetings with key players in the local community for compost, clothes, books, furniture and household appliances.

The implementation of the circuits is currently expected to be completed by mid-January 2023. To achieve this, the two partners are working closely together in their implementation. Specifically, the Ministry of Local Government is responsible for the procurement of the necessary equipment for each of these circuits, while  Deir Alaa Municipality is responsible for the implementation of the infrastructure.

Among the planned circuits, the composting circuit stands out, which will include a special truck to collect the waste from the farms and transport it to a composting factory, and a space set up for the sale and donation of the composting product.

Meanwhile, the clothing circuit will consist of special containers in enclaves such as schools, mosques and commercial stores; stores for clothing repair; and a specific shop for the sale and donation of repaired or reused clothing products.

Third, the book circuit will include special corners for collecting old books, stores for repairing books, and stores for selling and donating products at nominal prices to local citizens in order to convince and encourage them to use these products.

Similarly, the furniture circuit will consist of a special truck to collect furniture from homes, assess the potential for repairing it and, if so, transport it to the reuse workshops. The workshops themselves will be used for sale and donation at minimal fee.

Finally, the household appliances and electronics loop will include a special truck to pick up the appliances and transport them to the reuse area, after an assessment team inspects the appliances and electronics to see whether or not they can be repaired before transferring them to the reuse part. Finally, the reused appliances and electronics will be donated or sold at symbolic prices to the local citizens of Deir Alaa city.

REUSEMED proposes to create municipal networks based on reuse circuits for home appliances, furniture, books, clothes, Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment and food. To set up the networks, 4 cities in Spain, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia will design and test composting installations, food collection points in markets, repair and reuse centers, reuse corners in shops and repairing cafes.
