The BERLIN project was presented as a case study in the postgraduate course Building Integration of Photovoltaics (BIPVs) – Towards nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) of the University of Cyprus Interdepartmental Energy Programme of the Engineering School. The instructor of this lecture was Dr Alexandros Arsalis, Special Scientist (Research), FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, UCY who is involved in the pilot activities of BERLIN project.

During the lecture, the microgrid concept was described focusing on the activities of BERLIN project and presented the development of the Living Lab nanogrid based on Photovoltaic, Battery Energy Storage and Demand Side Management technologies. The motivation, aims and pilot developments related to the BERLIN project were described, along with the possibilities for further steps that can be exploited after the end of the project. It was emphasized how the BERLIN project can help to promote the wider adoption of distributed energy generation in Mediterranean regions with the implementation of cross-border pilot actions for the innovative and cost-effective energy rehabilitation of public buildings based on the microgrid concept. The key purpose of each pilot of BERLIN was briefly mentioned along with its overall technological characteristics.
