The ancient city of Jerash is located 48 km north of the capital city of Amman. It is one of the most popular attractions in Jordan in addtion to Petra. It is considered one of the largest and most well preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside of Italy and its history goes back more than 6,500 years.
The Jerash Greater Municipality, an associated partner in NAWAMED project, is the location of one of the two pilots which will be implemented in Jordan. NAWAMED team selected the Community Service Building of Jerash to treat the grey water using the green walls technology.
NAWAMED project will allow to test this innovative solution for reusing grey water in this historical beautiful city with an important impact also at communication level, taking in account the large number of visitors hosted each year. We want to become an example to be followed by other cities around Jordan.
The pilot location is a two-floor building, with a total area of 900 square meters and about 25 employees are working there. The building is also used for public meetings, training for municipality staff and local community, attracting daily a large number of people. Furthermore, the building where the green wall for treating the grey water will be installed, is close to a public park that welcomes thousands of visitors from the surrounding neighbourhoods during spring and summer time.
Our goal is to treat annually 600 m3 of grey water to be reused for irrigating the public park nearby. In fact, in this way, the NAWAMED project will launch a strong message for the citizens in order to save drinking water and foster the use of non-conventional water resources.
