As part of the the progress to a successful implementation of the DECOST pilot experience in Palestine, this summer some members of the Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie (PTUK) has held educational meetings about composting for young volunteers in the town of Anabta. Young volunteers are expected to be a crucial step to create effective links with the residents of Anbata, accompanying them in the proper functioning of the new waste management system. The DECOST pilot test in Palestine is aiming to introduce composting as a priority strategy to deal with the management of all the urban organic waste produced in a small town.  

Ms. Ruba Hanou, project coordinator, introduced the main concepts, goals and future benefits for the residents and for the environment that the DECOST project wants to achieve. In addition, she described the requirements and the expected outcomes from the volunteers in the upcoming awareness campaigns. The workshop covered the definition, benefits, challenges and methods of application of home and community composting. Finally, an open discussion was made to identify possible issues that may arise during the implementation of the project, how to prepare the households visits, questionnaires and various awareness activities.
