The launching event of the CEOMED project took place in Seville (Spain) on 21st of November 2019. The event, hosted by the lead beneficiary IDENER, saw the participation of the six CEOMED partners:

  • Optimización orientada a la sostenibilidad (IDENER), Spain
  • Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spain
  • University of Federico II di Napoli (UNINA), Italy
  • Democritus University (DUTH), Greece
  • University of Jordan (UJO)
  • Center of Biotechnology of Sfax (CBS), Tunisia

CEOMED (“Employing circular economy approach for organic fraction of municipal solid waste management within the Mediterranean countries”) aims to develop an entire chain of valorization of the solid fraction of organic waste produced in open-air markets. Further to a biological process (anaerobic digestion), the treated waste will transferred in energy (biogas) and fertilizers to grow the fruit and vegetable crops that sold on the markets. This process will be implemented in two different cities: Amman in Jordan and Sfax in Tunisia. The project expects to reduce municipal waste, as well as the cost of energy and raw material in the markets.

During the kick-off meeting, the partners presented their respective activities and next steps for implementation. During the first steps 6 months, DUTH will be in charge of defining the methodology for the selective collection of waste and organizing info points in local open-air markets. Meanwhile, the piloting partners (CBS and UJO) will design the plants adapting the equipment with the flow of waste and requirements in each target market. Through these activities, technical researchers from UNINA and CSIC will develop a mathematical model with the optimization of anaerobic digestion and the production of fertilizers.
