On 18 November 2020, Cerema (France), which stands for Center for studies and Expertise on Risks, The Environment, Mobility and Urban Planning, presented RE-MED project that is co-financed (90%) by the European Programme ENI CBC MED, during the specific session dedicated to dissemination of EU projects focusing on the recovery of waste, both in terms of new materials and energy.

The 5th Symposium on Urban Mining and Circular Economy (SUM2020) was organised by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) on 18-20 November 2020 as a fully virtual event.

This international conference is one of the major event on the diffusion of scientific knowledge on virtuous application and optimization of current practice in urban mining and circular economy. Over 200 scientific communication structured in 6 parallel tracks of oral session were presented as well as networking sessions, posters and virtual technical tours.

During this 5th edition, SUM 2020 focus on the concept of urban mining by addressing 11 different topics including education, valorisation of materials and resources, economic and financial aspects, urban mining and circular economy concepts in emerging and developing countries and policy and legal aspects.

The presentation prepared in collaboration with the University of Palermo (Italy), highlighted

- The complementarity between the expertise of the 9 partners from France, Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia

-The objective of RE-MED project that is "To initiate the construction of a recycling chain for construction and demolition waste to make it a lever for the societal, environment and digital transition of the Mediterranean territories"

-The expected achievements and expected technical, economic, environmental outputs like the construction of 3 recycling plants and an experimental road section, methodological guides & business models

-The societal expected impacts like new generation of professional, trained experts in Public Authorities, new local jobs creation that cannont be relocated, and the better knowledge of the Mediterranean Cultures, home of the world's most ancient civilization

Thanks to SUM2020, the visibility of RE-MED project has been increased within the scientific community composed by researchers, experts and PhD and post-doctoral students from various countries like Italy, China, UK, Portugal, France, Switzerland and Germany
