On the 5th of April 2021, the Tunisian partner of MED4EBM, l´Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM) held an awareness event on “Birdwatching for Ecotourism” in the Kneiss Islands in the Ghraiba golf. The event was organised with the collaboration of the association of the continuity of generations and the house of culture of Ghraiba and it involved stakeholders from the tourism sector, universities, primary and secondary schools, marine scoots of Sfax and the Non-Governmental Organizations. As Kneiss Islands is an area of international importance for nesting and migratory birds, the event was an opportunity to raise awareness about the preservation of birds and their stopovers in this area and to present the interest in developing birdwatching activity as an ecotourism/sustainable activity in the reserve.

To strengthen the education and awareness about the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats and to ensure the importance of birdwatching for ecotourism, a code of ethics and rules for the birds´ protection in this area were defined and this encouraged tourist operators to be more involved.
