The municipality of Capannori, together with ASCIT, will start in 2023 an experimental program to incentivize the local bars and restaurants to compost their organic waste. It is a new project, that aims at reducing waste produced in this town. It takes place within the framework of REUSEMED, in which Capannori joined with partners in Spain, Jordan and Tunisia. These initiatives don’t only aim at starting a circular economy, but also at developing environment-friendly initiatives such as composting.

Local bars and restaurants, together with other firms that produce organic waste, can ask to join this initiative by contacting the municipality. The companies that will be selected to participate will be given compost bins of a size considerably bigger than the usual ones at home, where they will put the trash they produce. In return, the municipality will guarantee tax discounts.

The city-commissioner for the environment, Mr. Giordano Del Chiaro said :“We have been working to further develop the virtuous cycle of composting with the aim to reach as soon as possible at least 50% of the population of Capannori, as stated in the plan of the municipality to inaugurate a sustainable model of circular economy”. “As a matter of fact, the percentage of the inhabitants of Capannori that dispose of their organic waste through composting is steadily increasing over time. Since the 1st of January to the 31st of October 2022, the municipality gave to the citizens of our town more than 150 compost bins. Compared to the 89 ones given in 2021, this is a very consistent improvement, that led us to have more than 4,000 compost bins spread around our territory”.

“This achievement also led to a 2% reduction in the percentage of organic waste that the municipality had to handle compared to last year, which went from the 3,748,530 tons in2021 to  3,682,020 tons in 2022” he declared. He also added that “Composting our organic waste is important because it doesn’t only allow us to reduce the trash we produce, but it also makes us able to produce at home the compost that we use in agricultural activities and in gardening. We will talk about this initiative, with our network of European towns that run experimental projects to develop  circular economy. The families that want to obtain a compost bins can do it at any moment filling up the form that they can easily find on the website of ASCIT”.
