One of the main objective of PROSIM project is to strengthen cross-border cooperation, capacity building and engagement in sustainable irrigation water management of local partner institutions at Mediterranean basin level, by sharing and capitalizing know-how; providing mutual support in the implementation of innovative solutions. To reach this goal, the project foresees 5 thematic web talks on irrigation solutions to guarantee regular, remote technical exchange and support among partners.

On the 28th of February, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) organized the first web talk of PROSIM project focused on research and best practices implemented by CSIC in Spain regarding water use efficiency in irrigation and the use of non-conventional water for agriculture.

After the introductory speech of Juan José Alarcón, Director at CSIC, Javier Juarez, Agrobusiness Director at Azud, a global company promoting "The Culture of Water" by valuing the water and environmental resources of the environment, presented the most relevant application of subsurface drip irrigation. This technology allows great improvement in water savings, with the benefits of both the environment and farmers' productivity.

The web talk also dealt with low-cost water desalination and sensor technology compact module, described by Francisco Pedrero, PROSIM project coordinator for CSIC, and with a focus on adaptation to freshwater scarcity through saline agriculture, illustrated by Andrés Parra, Agroecology Technician at CSIC.

Representatives from PROSIM partner institutions showed great interest in the contents of the web talk and had the chance of actively participating in the meeting, posing questions regarding the results of technologies implementation and the applicability of these technologies in their respective regions. PROSIM project has indeed the objective of fostering experiences and best practice exchange among professionals and policy-makers in the concerned countries, improving know-how and opportunities for the spreading of efficient irrigation practices in the Mediterranean basin.
