More than 229,000 tons of plastic are poured into the Mediterranean Sea every year. Waste that in a short time is returned along the coasts as floating waste. Marine litter is one of the biggest challenges facing our society and without the right answers, it is estimated that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the world's seas will exceed that of fish.

To address the problem, and its multiple effects on health, the economy and the environment, COMMON (Coastal Management and Monitoring Network for tackling marine litter in Mediterranean sea), a European project funded under the ENI CBC Med Programme, is creating a network of national and local institutions, research bodies and associations from 5 pilot areas in Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, in order to develop common solutions.

To facilitate the exchange of experiences and create opportunities for discussion between the municipal administrations of the two Italian pilot areas of the COMMON project (Salento and Maremma), CIHEAM Bari and Legambiente organize the national meeting "Towards the network of coastal cities to reduce marine litter in the Mediterranean": a round table between coastal communities which aims to establish a network between the areas directly affected by the issue, to share common problems and to identify concrete solutions and shared strategies for the correct management of the marine litter. The event is held on June 8th, 2021 at the headquarters of the Naval League in the Port Museum of Tricase (Apulia region), and will see, among others, the participation of the Directorate General for the Sea and the Coasts (MAC) – Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The results of the round table will be presented during the evening event "World Oceans Day", organized by CIHEAM Bari and the Regional Agency for the Prevention and Protection of the Environment (ARPA Puglia).

This will be followed by the projection of sixty underwater images selected as part of the photo contest "The Beautiful, the Bad and the Ugly in the Seas of Puglia", and the awarding of the first three classified with the "Arpa Mare 2021" award.
