Shifting local urban economies towards a circular production and consumption paradigm: The 1st INNOMED-UP conference shared experience

The 1st INNOMED-UP conference was held online on the 15th February 2021, reviewing the results achieved by the project in the first year of activities since its start in 2019.

As Mediterranean Cities face the problem of overwhelming waste production demanding effective and urgent actions, the INNOMED-UP Project proposes to work with Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) to shift local urban economies towards a circular production and consumption paradigm including optimal use of material resources, innovation enhancement for SMEs, knowledge transfer among Mediterranean cities, social inclusion, and citizens’ engagement.

The conference showcased the experience of the partners in developing new solutions to the problem of urban waste, by leveraging the know-how and creativity of CCIs that are present in the historical centers of the Mediterranean Cities. Partner cities from both shores of the Mediterranean Sea shared the practices that - based on their common cultural background and identity - attempt to integrate the principles of the circular economy into their productive schemes. Moreover, the aim of this event was to promote a close collaboration with other projects and territories working on the field of Circular Economy and CCIs and explore how SMEs are being supported in their efforts towards the circular transition.
