The flamingo is one of the most famous and majestic birds. They are characterized by their beautiful pink colour. But what is the origin of this colour?

Thanks to its acidic algae, mineral-rich water and the diversity of its aquatic creatures, the saline is an ideal habitat for flamingos.

COMMON (COastal Management and MOnitoring Network for tackling marine litter in Mediterranean Sea) is a European project under ENI CBC Med Programme, which aims at building a collaboration network between Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, to support a correct management of Marine Litter.

The Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer, based in Tunisia, is involved in the COMMON project with research and awareness activities. Sana Ben Ismail, Professor in physical oceanography, tells us the project ambitions.

COMMON is a European project under ENI CBC Med Programme, which aims at building a collaboration network between Italy, Tunisia and Lebanon, to support a correct management of Marine Litter.

Tyre Coast Nature Reserve is a precious Mediterranean heritage located in Lebanon, and an important nesting site for migratory birds and the endangered Loggerhead and green sea turtles. It is also a pilot area of ENI CBC Med COMMON project and there, environmental scientists work to protect the sea and its biodiversity from marine litter.

Celebrated every May 23, World Turtle Day is a great opportunity to promote knowledge and respect for turtles among public opinion and encourage initiatives that aim to protect and conserve these cheloniidae. The initiative is sponsored yearly since 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.
