The MedArtSal Operational plan and guidelines for policy development
This document illustrates an Operational Plan for the development of policies for the sustainable management of Mediterranean artisanal salinas, from an Ecosystem-Based Management perspective. The purpose of the document is to develop different strategic lines that improve the sustainability of the salinas. The plan's objectives include utilising a sustainability model and identifying constraints and opportunities for implementing the model. A specific sub-operational plan has been discussed for the four MedArtSal partner countries (Lebanon, Tunisia, Italy and Spain) highlighting the primary challenges faced by artisanal salt producers in keeping salt pans in operation in a profitable and sustainable manner, as well as the potential solutions and opportunities.
RESET – Guidebook of project outputs (EN, FR)
The main objective of this guidebook is to facilitate the access and dissemination of the outputs generated by some of the 19 key projects identified as part of the RESET project (which aims to facilitate economic and social development via supporting the creation of sustainable and green businesses), and targeting the following countries: Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Slovenia, Spain, and Tunisia. This guidebook is designed to support stakeholders in identifying, capitalising on, and benefiting from existing outputs to enhance their work in relation to the following identified themes: knowledge on Circular Economy Practices, knowledge on Access to Finance, access to Networks, Collaborations and Contacts.
RESET - Knowledge on Access to Finance - Analysis report on knowledge on investment opportunities and readiness
Despite the growing awareness and interest in green and circular businesses in the Mediterranean region, limited access to appropriate financing options remains a significant barrier. However, various initiatives and financial mechanisms are emerging to bridge this gap and to unlock the necessary funding and provide tailored financial instruments. Within the RESET project (which aims to facilitate economic and social development via supporting the creation of sustainable and green businesses) 19 key projects were identified to support their capitalisation and replication in other countries in the Mediterranean region and by diverse stakeholders. During the mapping process of the project, 3 themes were identified, including the “Knowledge on Access to Finance”. This report provides an analysis on the implementation of selected outputs within the 19 identified key projects under this theme.

The Mediterranean region is one of the most well-positioned (due to resource availability, environmental challenges and geographical connectivity) to adopt a Circular Economy (CE) model, which can help territories to achieve sustainable development goals while preserving its natural and cultural heritage for future generations. Within the RESET project (which aims to facilitate economic and social development via supporting the creation of sustainable and green businesses) 19 key projects were identified to support their capitalisation and replication in other countries in the Mediterranean region and by diverse stakeholders. RESET - Access to Networks, Collaboration, & Contacts - Analysis report on the centralisation of digital databases
Access to networks, collaborations and contacts is an important theme within capitalisation efforts on existing sustainable, green, and circular business support achievements in the Mediterranean region: it can help businesses to identify and access resources that they may not otherwise be aware of, it can help to learn from the experiences of others and to build relationships with key stakeholders. By networking, businesses can advocate for policies that support sustainable, green, and circular businesses. Within the RESET project (which aims to facilitate economic and social development via supporting the creation of sustainable and green businesses) 19 key projects were identified to support their capitalisation and replication in other countries in the Mediterranean region and by diverse stakeholders. MEDSt@rts Analysis of the Mediterranean microfinance industry (abstract)
Young entrepreneurs in the Mediterranean region encounter severe credit constraints and gathering enough money to start or scale up their enterprise is often impossible. The objective of MEDSt@rts project is to develop an innovative supporting model to facilitate access to funding for “non-bankable” people. MEDSt@rts partnership, as a preparatory activity to the design of a transnational network of microfinance, carried out an in-depth analysis of the state of the microfinance industry, at a local and national level. The organisations involved were SFIRS Spa in Italy, Chamber of Commerce of Achaia in Greece, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sfax in Tunisia, LEADERS in Palestine and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of South Lebanon in Lebanon.
Recommendations for the strategy of financial inclusion of micro and small businesses in Lebanon
The MEDSt@rts project started to support young innovative entrepreneurs pitch their new business ideas, and then get the needed business development and access to finance to launch their own businesses. In that regard, the Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture in Sidon and South Lebanon (CCIAS) launched the microfinance and Business Development Services (BDS) forum that engaged Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), BDS providers, bankers and experts in the economic development eco-system, to provide a series of discussions about financial inclusion, business development role, legal and regulatory issues, and the way forward to help MSMEs and youth start-ups succeed as a pre requisite towards the universal sustainability development goals. The document below, which illustrates recommendations for the strategy of financial inclusion of micro and small businesses in Lebanon, contains a summary of the 12 days presentations and discussion that took place among the forum participants.
MedArtSal - Interest and attitude towards salt-related tourism experiences in salinas: a demand - side study in Italy
In the framework of MedArtSal project, a study was carried out to explore Italians' interest in the preferred types of salt-related tourism activities and experiences that salinas might implement to diversify their business by entering the tourism and hospitality sector. This document illustrates the methodology of the study and its findings, which provide useful information to salinas manager, policymakers, destination marketers and tourism stakeholders being somehow interested in boosting their positioning in the salt-related tourism market, a market that seems to be still in its quite early stage in Italy (as shown by the huge number of respondents that have never visited salinas).
Sustainable Management Model for Mediterranean Artisanal Salinas (final report)
This document describes the MedArtSal management model for the sustainability of Mediterranean artisanal salinas, from a new business model to an environmental-base innovation. This model promotes the adoption of innovative sustainable actions in artisanal salinas and is made up of good practices, commerce, biodiversity and ecosystem service preservation, as well as other services. The purpose of the document is to present the final version of the MedArtSal model and all the hands-on tools for fostering the application of the model suggestions and best practices, developed with a collaborative approach and support of several salinas from the project countries (Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Lebanon).
MedArtSal Handbook of good practices for coastal salt pans - final report
The MedArtSal project promotes the sustainable development of artisanal salinas in Italy, Spain, Lebanon and Tunisia, through the MedArtSal Model, which identifies and encourages the adoption of innovative sustainable actions in Mediterranean artisanal saltworks. This handbook provides information, research and innovative tools on sustainable actions that fall under the MedArtSal Model and support good practices and efforts in the salt flats through diversification of services, commerce, biodiversity preservation, ecosystem services and tourism. There are four sections covering key topics, including environmental quality and biodiversity, the diversification of goods and services in salt flats, best practices for governance and a final section showcasing case studies of salinas projects funded under MedArtSal in Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia.
MedArtSal Governance analysis for coastal salt pans
The MedArtSal project, addressing common challenges in four Mediterranean regions (Italy, Spain, Lebanon and Tunisia), promotes the development of a sustainable and adaptable management model, fostering the territorial valorisation of artisanal salinas. This report entitled “Analysis of the regulatory framework and governance of salinas in the Mediterranean region: the cases of Tunisia, Italy, Lebanon, and Spain” provides an overview of governance, planning and regulations affecting the management of artisanal solar evaporation salinas in the Mediterranean.
MedArtSal Tourism Book - a travel experience along Med salinas
This travel book has been realised in the framework of the MedArtSal project (which promotes the sustainable development of artisanal salinas) by all the project partners from Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Lebanon. A road map of thirteen storytellers illustrates the MedArtSal experiences during the project, when the MedArtSal team visited many saltpans across the Mediterranean. The main aim of this travel book is to show what has been discovered, how much attractive are the salinas in Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Lebanon and how to experience the sustainable tourism in these Mediterranean area.
