MedArtSal - Interest and attitude towards salt-related tourism experiences in salinas: a demand - side study in Italy
In the framework of MedArtSal project, a study was carried out to explore Italians' interest in the preferred types of salt-related tourism activities and experiences that salinas might implement to diversify their business by entering the tourism and hospitality sector. This document illustrates the methodology of the study and its findings, which provide useful information to salinas manager, policymakers, destination marketers and tourism stakeholders being somehow interested in boosting their positioning in the salt-related tourism market, a market that seems to be still in its quite early stage in Italy (as shown by the huge number of respondents that have never visited salinas).
Sustainable Management Model for Mediterranean Artisanal Salinas (final report)
This document describes the MedArtSal management model for the sustainability of Mediterranean artisanal salinas, from a new business model to an environmental-base innovation. This model promotes the adoption of innovative sustainable actions in artisanal salinas and is made up of good practices, commerce, biodiversity and ecosystem service preservation, as well as other services. The purpose of the document is to present the final version of the MedArtSal model and all the hands-on tools for fostering the application of the model suggestions and best practices, developed with a collaborative approach and support of several salinas from the project countries (Italy, Spain, Tunisia and Lebanon).
MedArtSal Handbook of good practices for coastal salt pans - final report
The MedArtSal project promotes the sustainable development of artisanal salinas in Italy, Spain, Lebanon and Tunisia, through the MedArtSal Model, which identifies and encourages the adoption of innovative sustainable actions in Mediterranean artisanal saltworks. This handbook provides information, research and innovative tools on sustainable actions that fall under the MedArtSal Model and support good practices and efforts in the salt flats through diversification of services, commerce, biodiversity preservation, ecosystem services and tourism. There are four sections covering key topics, including environmental quality and biodiversity, the diversification of goods and services in salt flats, best practices for governance and a final section showcasing case studies of salinas projects funded under MedArtSal in Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia.
MedArtSal Governance analysis for coastal salt pans
The MedArtSal project, addressing common challenges in four Mediterranean regions (Italy, Spain, Lebanon and Tunisia), promotes the development of a sustainable and adaptable management model, fostering the territorial valorisation of artisanal salinas. This report entitled “Analysis of the regulatory framework and governance of salinas in the Mediterranean region: the cases of Tunisia, Italy, Lebanon, and Spain” provides an overview of governance, planning and regulations affecting the management of artisanal solar evaporation salinas in the Mediterranean.
How to build the MedArtSal model (final report)
The aim of this report is to develop a Sustainability Model for Coastal Artisanal Salinas in Mediterranean countries. By using it, salt owners will be able to assess their sustainability in terms of economy, environment and innovation, identifying their strengths and weaknesses in order to improve. The obtained model will be a complex mix of economic, social, cultural, management and governance variables. Ultimately, in this report there are a series of improvements most widely implemented in the Mediterranean Salinas in order to acquire a higher level of sustainability in the 3 main building topics of the model: biodiversity; economics and productivity; salinas management.
A Practical Guide: Crowdfunding for CCI Projects in the South Mediterranean Region
Under the INVESTMED project, project partner, EMEA collaborated with Verkami, the leading reward crowdfunding platform in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, to develop a practical guide for entities in the cultural and creatives based in the Southern Mediterranean.
The guide briefly explains the different kinds of crowdfunding, focusing on reward crowdfunding and explains which companies are more suited to the approach and at what stage. It then runs through a step-by-step guide on how to launch a campaign, communication tips to grow the community, and advice on pitching the rewards to encourage more people to donate. It is aimed at MSMEs looking for alternative financing given that in the region, accessing finance presents myriad challenges for small and medium businesses.
Identification and collection of SMEs’ offers and Needs
Collection of at least 80 Open Innovation opportunities (solutions and offers) in the platform to promote partnerships, open innovation, and faster uptake of research results. The activity will identify solutions and needs from SMEs and start-ups that have interest to set up collaborations at cross border level with emphasis to key sustainability areas. To achieve a balanced geographical spread, the programme will design a model that will allow to categorize different needs and solutions.
Euro-Mediterranean Open Innovation Network Handbook development
The experience and the feedback gained from these workshops will be integrated into a “EuroMED Open Innovation Network Handbook” which will be offered to policy makers, intermediaries, and agencies in EU & MPC countries. Correction measures and actions will be integrated for fine-tuning, guiding, or even shifting (if necessary) the delivery mechanism or the nature of services offered addressed. Feasibility and financial sustainability planning including roadmap for post project activities.
MedTOWN Pilot projects on co-production initiatives
In total, 10 pilot projects in co-production initiatives in collaboration with public authorities and SSE entities have been funded through subgranting. As a result, over 800 individuals benefitted directly from the pilots project’s implementation. This process also led to the creation of 14 new jobs and the strengthening of 18 social enterprises. These pilot projects represent a significant milestone in the project, demonstrating the commitment to tangible, impactful action of local multilateral stakeholder partnerships.
MedTOWN Legal framework for the use of Complementary Currencies (CC), Electronic Money (EM) and Payment Service Providers (PSP)
This report analyses the legal framework of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) in the 6 countries participating in the MedTOWN Project (Spain, Greece, Jordan, Palestine, Portugal and Tunisia), and the various issues related to it, such as procedures, formulas or instruments that facilitate the best implementation of SSE actions, co-production of public policies, public-private partnerships, use of complementary social currencies, electronic payments,
The main issues to be addressed in the following report are as follows:
• Regulatory and legal framework related to Complementary Currencies (CC), Electronic Money (EM) and Payment Service Providers (PSP) and their ecosystem in the countries. Definition, Regulation and Purpose.
• Scope of application of the regulations in CC, MS and PSP. Territorial and subjective. Main Actors Involved. Public and Private Sector.

MedTOWN The Phoenix Journey: Transformative Pathways for Eco social Co-production
The MedTOWN project partnership developed a high-quality Capacity Building and Technical Service Plan with the brand name “The Phoenix Journey: Transformative Pathways for Ecosocial Co-production”. This plan is designed to support the creation and implementation of co-production initiatives for the social and economic integration of vulnerable groups, in partnership with Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) actors. A team of local experts participated in two Training of Trainers Co-Creation Workshops to adapt the capacity building programme to their local context and territory. These sessions provided a range of tools and instruments for establishing local communities of practice and co-production partnerships through 4 day National Workshops on co-production of social services. The training is available online in the MedTOWN Community of Practice platform, which automatically produces a Certificate of completing the training. MedTOWN Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Report of the Demonstrative Actions
MedTOWN has created a framework for monitoring and evaluating social experimentation. This process was a complex task due to the diversity of social policies in each territory and the lack of regulatory frameworks for Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) and co-production across the six countries. MedTOWN's approach to this challenge was to provide findings that could immediately and practically serve policy-making. This was achieved by evaluating intentional, unintentional, and political changes in local socio-economic resilience.
The current evaluation aims to offer a regional perspective on the MedTOWN project, providing an overall assessment of its achievements, learnings, and findings. It synthesizes research and evaluation conducted by a team of local experts. The evaluation addresses both summative and formative aspects, examining whether the project achieved its goal of demonstrating the value of co-producing public policies with Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) actors. The assessment also aims to provide valuable insights for project actors and stakeholders, emphasizing the interconnected nature of summative and formative dimensions.
